MEET Steve Shrader’s BRIGHTMARE
This car has seen its fair share of combinations but the V13 Vortech is by far the best combo we’ve built for the car. This is the quickest and fastest centrifugal coyote that’s racing in Stick Shift 1/4 mile known to exist at the time of this writing. And that’s with a standard diaphragm style clutch!
This car is not an exotic build. But we are one of only a few pushing a belt driven centri blower to these ETs in a sea of turbo cars. The V13 fits in the same mounting bracket as all other Vortech head units, so it’s an easy upgrade over a YSI or S-Trim. We run a custom length 10-rib belt and pulley setup to prevent belt slip.
With a 6-spd Liberty T56 Magnum transmission, we have the capability to run low-mid 8’s at the track and still drive on the street with an overdrive gear set. Brightmare rocks a Driveshaft Shop carbon fiber driveshaft and a 4.10 rear gear in order to keep the Vortech higher in the linear boost curve and cross the 1/4 mile at about 8400 rpm; the sweet spot for a centrifugal blower. We built a custom 5″ opening in the hood to feed cooler air into the impeller which helps create a ram-air effect at higher speeds.
It was important for us to see how far we could push the McLeod RXT1200 clutch without having to go to an adjustable or “Slipper” style clutch to keep that true street car theme. The clutch pedal slip is controlled through a clutch “tamer” device designed by Garrett Leach which slips 1st gear in a controlled manner that we can adjust based on track conditions. We can datalog the clutch pedal movement and analyze the results after each pass to make tiny adjustments to slip the discs precisely to maintain the best traction for the racing surface.
The coyote engine was built at Shrader Performance featuring a sleeved block, DSS Pistons, 300M rods, ported MHS heads and cams, with VCT locked out. This engine combo with the Vortech makes for a very unique sound through the Magnaflow mufflers, and is hard to miss at the track amongst all the quieter turbo cars.
We do have a T-shirt available if you follow Brightmare, perfect for the stick shift lover in your family. You can find that shirt here at THIS LINK ! If you see us at the track, be sure to swing by and check it out!
